Filmmaker Anurag Basu shared his thoughts on the Hindi film industry, saying that our films are mainly watched by Indians and a small group of people who are passionate about cinema. He compared the Hindi film industry to the Korean film industry, calling both of them “young.”
According to him, Indian films are mostly seen by Indian audiences, whereas Korean films have a global audience. Anurag feels that the Hindi film industry still has a long way to go in gaining global recognition. While world cinema is starting to notice Indian films, mainstream Bollywood films continue to cater mainly to the Indian diaspora and the local audience.
He said, “We still are far behind in getting a global audience. We only get an Indian audience globally. It’s a long way to go.” He pointed out that Hindi cinema, like Korean cinema, is still growing but doesn’t reach a global audience the way Korean films do. While the Korean industry has gained worldwide popularity, Indian films are mainly focused on local success, with the main goal being weekend box office numbers, like hitting 100 crore or 500 crore.
Anurag also shared an update on his upcoming film Aashiqui 3, starring Kartik Aaryan. He mentioned that the team has not started shooting yet but will begin next month. Currently, they are working on the pre-production phase of the film.
In addition to Aashiqui 3, Anurag is also working on the sequel to Life in a Metro, titled Metro In Dino. This anthology film will feature actors like Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, and Konkona Sen Sharma. Anurag is known for his films such as Barfi, Life In a Metro, Ludo, and Jagga Jasoos.
