Legendary Indian cricketer and former World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni reached Chennai Airport before leaving for Delhi as the IPL 2025 season comes closer. Dhoni will once again play in IPL 2025 for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), aiming for his sixth title. Under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK will start their journey against Mumbai Indians (MI), their biggest rivals, at their home ground Chepauk.
It is still not clear if this will be Dhoni’s last IPL season, but ever since his international retirement in 2020, fans have been guessing about when he will say goodbye to the league.
With five IPL trophies as captain, Dhoni’s legacy is unmatched, but fans are always curious about when he will retire. Before the IPL 2025 auction, CSK retained Dhoni as an uncapped player for Rs 4 crore. This was possible due to a special rule introduced before the 2024 auction, which allowed teams to retain players as uncapped if they had not played international cricket for five years.
Since retiring from international cricket, Dhoni has only played in the IPL, remaining a key player for CSK. In IPL 2024, he played 11 innings, scoring 161 runs at an unbelievable strike rate of 220 and an average of 53.66. He stayed not out in 8 innings, proving himself as a great finisher for CSK.
Dhoni is the sixth-highest run-scorer in IPL history, with 5,243 runs in 264 matches and 229 innings, at an average of 39.12 and a strike rate of 137.53. He has 24 fifties, and his highest IPL score is 84 not out. While Dhoni is most famous for playing with CSK, he also played for Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in 2016 and 2017.
As another IPL season arrives, all eyes will be on MS Dhoni, not just for his performance but also for any signs about his future in IPL.
