Mumbai Indians Get First Win in IPL 2025, But Rohit Sharma’s Form Worries Michael Vaughan

Mumbai Indians finally won their first match of IPL 2025, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by eight wickets at Wankhede Stadium on Monday. However, former England captain Michael Vaughan raised concerns about Rohit Sharma’s batting form, as he has scored only 21 runs in three matches this season.

Rohit Sharma’s Struggle in IPL 2025

Rohit’s performance in the three matches so far has been disappointing:

  • 0 runs in the first match
  • 8 runs in the second match
  • 13 runs in the third match

In the last five IPL seasons, he has crossed 400 runs only once.

Rohit played as an Impact Player against KKR, coming onto the field only in the 16th over while Mumbai Indians chased down 117 runs with 49 balls left.

Michael Vaughan’s Concerns

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Vaughan said:
“We are now judging Rohit just as a batter because he is no longer the captain. If you look at his numbers, they are very average. If his name wasn’t Rohit Sharma, he might have been dropped by now. Those numbers are not good enough for a player like him.”

Vaughan added that if Rohit was still the captain, his leadership skills and experience could have made up for his poor batting form. But now that he is only a batter, he needs to start scoring runs.

Despite his poor form, Vaughan does not believe that Mumbai Indians will drop Rohit from the team because of his X-factor.

“I’m not saying they should remove him. I’m not going to drop him. He just needs to find his rhythm again. Mumbai needs their senior players like Rohit, Trent Boult, and Suryakumar Yadav to perform so that the youngsters can play freely,” Vaughan explained.

Vaughan Questions Mumbai’s Captaincy Change

Vaughan also questioned why Mumbai Indians removed Rohit from captaincy and gave the role to Hardik Pandya last year.

“I don’t understand how Rohit is good enough to be India’s captain but not Mumbai’s. He is a brilliant leader and has done a great job for India. If he is the best choice to lead the national team, why not the IPL team? I just don’t get it,” Vaughan said.

He concluded by saying that the decision to replace Rohit as Mumbai’s captain still confuses him, and he feels it might not have been the right move.

Now, all eyes will be on Rohit Sharma as fans hope he finds his form and helps the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025!
