Jasprit Bumrah will lead India against Australia if…: Gambhir clears air on captaincy

Captaincy Decision for the First Test

With the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaching, head coach Gautam Gambhir has provided clarity on India’s captaincy plan for the opening Test against Australia in Perth. Gambhir announced that Jasprit Bumrah will take over as captain if Rohit Sharma is unable to participate in the series opener on November 22 due to family commitments.

Rohit recently acknowledged his uncertainty about playing in the match, citing his personal commitments. Meanwhile, Gambhir also discussed India’s options for openers, mentioning KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran as likely candidates if Rohit misses the first Test.

Speaking about India’s preparations for the Australian series, Gambhir emphasized the need for a solid 10-day training period on Australian pitches to ensure the team is ready to perform from the outset.

“The main challenge lies in adjusting to the conditions. Playing at home in India is vastly different from playing in Australia. If we can train effectively for 10 days before the series, we’ll be well-prepared. We have a lot of seasoned players who’ve been to Australia multiple times, and their insights will be beneficial for our younger players. These 10 days will be vital, and come the morning of the 22nd, we should be fully set and ready to go,” Gambhir stated.

Following a 3-0 series loss to New Zealand at home, India is eager for a fresh start. Gambhir, who recently stepped in as head coach, has faced criticism for the historic defeat. Acknowledging this, he expressed that the team is taking the criticism constructively.

“We accept that we were thoroughly outperformed. There’s no defending that. New Zealand excelled in all three departments, and we acknowledge it. We’re taking this feedback in stride and focusing on continual improvement,” Gambhir remarked.

He added, “My rapport with Rohit is excellent. Our recent match in Kanpur was outstanding as well. Although we haven’t been at our best, it doesn’t alter our approach. Australia is a new challenge, and our mindset is to go in aiming for victory.”
