Kangana Ranaut has spoken about the delay in releasing her first solo directorial movie, Emergency, which is now scheduled to hit theatres on January 17.
In a recent interview, she shared her thoughts on the issues surrounding the film and admitted to making several “wrong choices” during its making. These included directing the film herself and deciding on a theatrical release instead of opting for an OTT platform.
Kangana on the Delay in Emergency Release
Speaking to News18, Kangana shared her worries about the film’s delay, which was caused when the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) took months to approve it. She said, “I was scared. I felt it was a wrong decision to release it in theatres. I could have gotten a better deal on OTT platforms. I also wouldn’t have had to go through censorship, and the CBFC wouldn’t have removed or dissected my film. I didn’t know what parts they would allow or reject.”
The CBFC is responsible for certifying movies in India and ensures that they are suitable for public viewing. It works under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.
Wrong Choices During Emergency Production
Kangana admitted to making other mistakes during the movie’s production. She explained, “I feel I made wrong decisions on many levels, like wanting to direct this film myself. I assumed things would be easier because we don’t have a Congress government anymore. I referred to the movie Kissa Kursi Ka—nobody has seen that film even now because all the prints were destroyed back then. Also, no one has made a movie about Mrs. Indira Gandhi before. With Emergency, the younger generation will get to see how she became such a powerful figure, serving as Prime Minister three times. But I underestimated how challenging it would be to make a film on this subject.”
