Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar raised doubts about KL Rahul’s position as an opener for India in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy match against Australia. The first Test is scheduled for November 22 at Perth’s Optus Stadium.
Manjrekar, while talking to ESPNcricinfo, shared his concerns about Rahul’s recent form.
“It’s not like KL Rahul is doing anything special as an opener,” he said.
He further explained his thoughts on Rahul’s current form.
“You have to feel for him. I really like him as a player, and he has a lot of talent. But he seems low on confidence. You don’t want a player like him opening the batting, because the start from the top order—positions 1, 2, and 3—sets the tone for the entire innings,” Manjrekar added.
Manjrekar suggested that Rahul might be better suited for the middle order. He referred to Rahul’s performance as No. 6 during India’s tour of South Africa.
“I’m suggesting KL Rahul for the role he’s played lower in the order. He was batting at No. 6 with a softer Kookaburra ball. If he has to bat with the tailenders, I believe he will do a great job there. So, I feel KL Rahul can contribute more at that position,” he said.
Rahul’s preparation for the first Test has come under question after a recent injury. During a practice match simulation on Friday, he was hit on the elbow, forcing him to stop his session early and miss a key training session on Saturday.
However, on Sunday, Rahul was back at practice for three hours. While he seemed recovered from the injury, his batting was not as smooth as usual.
With Shubman Gill ruled out of the Perth Test due to a thumb injury sustained during slip catching practice, Rahul’s fitness has become even more important for the team.
