Pakistan Cricket Board’s Big Loss if Champions Trophy is Postponed

India’s Refusal and the Uncertainty Around the Tournament

With the ongoing standoff between India and Pakistan over the 2025 Champions Trophy, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) could suffer massive financial losses if the tournament is either postponed or moved to another country. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it clear that the Indian men’s cricket team will not be traveling to Pakistan for the big tournament next year. As things stand, the Champions Trophy is set to happen in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9, but with all the uncertainty, no match schedule has been released yet.

A Historic Opportunity for Pakistan Cricket

This would be a historic moment for Pakistan, as it would mark the first time they would host an ICC global event since co-hosting the ODI World Cup in 1996. The PCB is keen to show the world that Pakistan, despite facing regular security concerns, is safe for big international tournaments. But India’s refusal has thrown the whole event into trouble. The PCB, on its part, has rejected a hybrid model, which would see India’s matches being held at neutral venues like the UAE.

The Financial Impact of Moving or Postponing the Tournament

According to a report in Cricbuzz, if the tournament is moved or delayed, the PCB may face sanctions from the ICC, which could include reductions in the substantial funding they receive from the ICC. Not only that, moving or postponing the Champions Trophy would mean a loss of around USD 65 million in hosting fees, which is a big amount for the PCB. This loss will sting even more since PCB has already invested a lot in upgrading facilities at three main venues in Pakistan: Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore, specifically for the Champions Trophy.

Pakistan Questions India’s Security Concerns

The PCB has asked the ICC to clarify the reason behind India’s refusal, especially since other big teams like New Zealand, England, and Australia have toured Pakistan multiple times in recent years. Pakistani media also questioned India’s security concerns, given that teams from other countries have safely played series in Pakistan.

Legal and Commercial Ramifications for the ICC

If Pakistan ends up not hosting the Champions Trophy, the ICC could face additional challenges too. Broadcasters and sponsors expect high-profile matches featuring both India and Pakistan, which are huge crowd-pullers and revenue generators. Without Pakistan’s involvement, there might be legal issues with commercial partners, loss of revenue, and a potential decline in ICC’s overall financial distribution to cricket boards around the world.

The Future of the Champions Trophy

The BCCI remains firm on the hybrid model, and there’s a chance the Champions Trophy might eventually be shifted to another venue. For now, however, all eyes are on the ICC to see how they handle this tricky situation.
