India’s former top spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, has seen everything—playing for multiple IPL teams, the increasing business side of the league, and how franchises have changed over the years. But as he returned to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after almost ten years, one thing remained the same—the special team atmosphere.
“It feels like it’s 2011 again,” said Ashwin, who was honored by Krishnamachari Srikkanth on Sunday at the book launch of ‘Leo – The Untold Story of CSK’, written by PS Raman.
A Full Circle Journey
Ashwin made his IPL debut in 2009 with CSK and was part of their championship-winning teams in 2010 and 2011. Over the years, he played for other teams like Punjab Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants (now closed), Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. But now, at 38 years old, the Tamil Nadu cricketer is back with CSK for his 16th IPL season.
“It was a great experience playing for different teams and understanding their culture. But one thing that stands out is how CSK has remained unique. While the cricket world has changed so much, CSK has evolved but still kept its original essence,” said Ashwin.

CSK: A Cricket-First Team
Ashwin spoke about how the corporate world has influenced cricket teams today. “Nobody runs a business to make a loss—I understand that. But teams have changed a lot. However, CSK is still the same team at heart. It is pure cricket. The best way to achieve success is to keep it cricket-oriented,” he added.
For Ashwin, coming back to CSK is not about returning as a senior player but about enjoying cricket again.
“Life is about completing a full circle. My comeback is not just about achievements, but about reliving those wonderful moments I had years ago. CSK is a special place to be,” he said.
‘Wanted My 100th Test to Be My Last’
CSK legend MS Dhoni was also present at the book launch event. Ashwin shared how much Dhoni means to him.
Recalling his 100th Test match, Ashwin revealed that he invited Dhoni to hand over his memento at Dharamshala (March last year against England). He even planned to retire after that match.
“I wanted MS to be there for my 100th Test and give me the memento. I thought that would be my last match. But he couldn’t come. However, he gave me a bigger gift—bringing me back to CSK. Thank you, MS,” Ashwin said.
