Wishes poured in as Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket after the third Test between India and Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ended in a draw at The Gabba on Wednesday. Not just on social media, but cricketers, both current and former, also personally wished Ashwin.
Among them were the great Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev, who called Ashwin after he returned to Chennai on Thursday.
Ashwin shared a screenshot of his call log with the caption:
“If someone told me 25 years ago that I would have a smartphone and the call log on the last day of my career as an Indian cricketer would look like this, I would have had a heart attack then only. Thanks, @sachin_rt and @therealkapildev paaji. #blessed”
Tendulkar and Ashwin were teammates in Test cricket for around two years, and both were part of the victorious 2011 ODI World Cup squad.
Ashwin’s Career
Ashwin retired as the second-highest Test wicket-taker for India, with 537 wickets, showing his talent, hard work, and rare skills. He was the only Indian all-rounder to score 3000 runs and take 500 wickets.
Ashwin formed a strong partnership with Ravindra Jadeja, which played a key role in India’s dominance in home Test matches for over a decade. Together, they became a nightmare for visiting teams on Indian turning pitches.
Overseas, Ashwin was not always part of the playing XI but still took 154 wickets on foreign soil. As a batter, he was more than useful and even scored six Test centuries.
